The Tummy Tuck

A very common procedure, the tummy tuck is also known as an abdominoplasty. This surgery targets excess fat and loose skin around the abdominal area. The tummy tuck is designed to create a firmer and flatter stomach whenever there is significant sagging skin with excess fat and stretch marks or scarring.

It is important to note that this surgery aims to treat three problems at the same time:

The Excess fat: It appears with ageing in men most often around forty years old and after menopause in most women.

The excess of skin: During pregnancy the skin and muscles beneath may have been stretched and have not returned to their pre-pregnancy form. In addition to pregnancy, dramatic weight loss can have the same effect on the abdominal area.

A spacing of the abdominal muscles (diastasis of the rectus of the abdomen) of congenital origin or following a caesarean.

The tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthetic and requires one or two nights at the Clinic. The surgery can take between one to three hours subject on the work that needs to be done. Three phases are performed by the surgeon:

The Abdominal Liposuction

The surgeon starts by removing the fat on the tummy and the love handles. The liposuction helps to reshape the stomach before removing any skin excess.

Stomach surgery

There are two types of procedures upon the amount of sagging skin that will need to be removed.

– For a minimal amount of excess of skin, the surgeon executes a mini-tummy tuck. The sagging skin is removed under the navel without touching the muscles. This method reduces the risk of bleeding and offer a small scar and a shorter downtime.

– For any significant amount of skin excess, the surgeon performs a full tummy tuck. The excess of skin is removed on the lower part of the abdomen while the upper half is tightened again and finally the navel is redraw at a normal height.

During the surgery, an incision above the pubic zone is made. It is important to note that the incision for this surgery can be sizable but you will be left with a visible scar which can be hidden under women’s underwear.

Firming the muscles

The surgeon repairs the tension of the abdominal muscles. This technique will create a solid stomach belt, flattens the tummy area and enhance the waist.

  • Visible result can be seen straight after the surgery: A flat and taut stomach with a thinned waist.
  • Excess of fat and skin have been removed as well as any stretch marks or scars
  • Boost of confidence

This procedure usually requires six weeks downtime. For one to two days, a pressure dressing and drains are set up. The patient will then wear day and night a special corset for one to two months.

After 15 to 20 days, the stitches are removed, and the scar should fade away gradually after a year or two. It is important to note that the scar will never completely disappear.
