Ethics & Safety > FAQ > FAQ Laser Hair Removal

Is laser hair removal economic in the long term?

All other forms of hair removal require either shaving or waxing and need constant attention. To achieve semi-permanent hair removal, you will need to wax twice per month, every month. The laser will pay for itself in 1 to 2 years and you’ll definitely see the difference.

How long should I wait between sessions?

For permanent hair removal, the recommended period is 8 weeks for body hair and 4 weeks for facial hair. The time interval varies between women and men, it also depends on the density of hair to be removed.

Is laser hair removal effective on dark skin tones?

Yes, it is now possible to treat black and matte skin tones. We use a different laser, an adapted Nd:Yag.

At what age can you start a laser hair removal programme?

It is important to have gone through puberty and to have stability in hormonal levels. Normally, we do not recommend starting until after 16 years of age.

What should I do between sessions?

You should only use a razor on the treated area. Waxing, electric shavers or the use of tweezers is not recommended. The treated area ‘rests’ between sessions. The hair will become thinner and less dense, thereby allowing for further sessions.

Is it painful?

That depends on the type of laser used and also your emotional state (eg: immediately following menstruation). The sensation depends on you and varies from person to person, it can be a slight tingle through to a hot sting (similar to being flicked by an elastic band). Normally an anaesthetic cream is not necessary but can be prescribed if you wish.

Why choose permanent hair removal?

Daily shaving is tedious, the result is never perfect, it can cause ingrown hairs and it does not leave your skin soft and smooth. When using tweezers you can only attend to small areas; it may also encourage re-growth by splitting the bulb or ingrown hairs, which can be painful and unsightly.

Using the waxing method usually means 2 applications per month to achieve a smooth, hair-free skin. In addition, there is a risk of burning and ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal is simple, fast and effective and provides a definitive result. You will have soft perfect skin.

Is it a safe technique?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure with proven results stretching back over 20 years. The laser requires a precise setting for each patient. The Epilium consultant will observe the rules and protocols necessary to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
